Packing Tips

CAUTION - - DO NOT STORE ANYTHING COMBUSTIBLE SUCH AS GASOLINE, PAINT, SOLVENTS.  DRAIN GASOLINE FROM ALL LAWN MOWERS AND TOOLS.

DO NOT STORE ANY HAZARDOUS MATERIAL OF ANY KIND.  WE DO NOT ALLOW IT.

Insure your items.  The goods you place in storage spaces are the sole responsibility of you, their owner.  Items are not insured by Gulf Coast Storage.  Check with your insurance agent for coverage or ask us for a referral.

Plan your storage space.  Place frequently used items near the door and leave a walkway to the rear of the space.

Make an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place.  Number each box on all four sides and match the inventory list with the box number.

Make sure your boxes are strong enough for the contents.  Use boxes of equal size.  Don't put too much weight in each box.  Stack them shoulder high.

Seal the boxes with plastic tape.

Stack the heavier boxes on the bottom.

Put plastic sheeting or wooden slats under the boxes especially next to the door.  This will prevent moisture from entering the boxes on the floor.

Don't store heat sensitive item such as plants or candles.

Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror crates and marked fragile.

Furniture and drawers can be utilized as storage for small items.  Wrap them in towels, tablecloths, or blankets to prevent breakage.

Shovels, rakes, and hoses can be stored in trash cans.  Extra cans will stack inside each other.

Cover furniture with covers to protect against dust.

Place valuable items in boxes toward the rear of the unit.

This unit will hold small furniture such as a chest of drawers, several boxes and small items.  Another rule of thumb is a 6 x 8 trailer will hold the same amount as a 5 x 10 unit.

10 x 10 Storage Unit

This unit will hold the standard furnishings from a one bedroom apartment with a refrigerator  or washer and dryer, plus boxes and small items.  Another rule of thumb is a 15 foot moving van will hold the same amount as a 10 x 10 unit.

10 x 20 Storage Unit

This unit will hold the standard furnishings from a two or three bedroom apartment/home with appliances, many boxes, and extras.  A car or truck will also fit.  Another rule of thumb is a 24 foot moving van will hold the same amount as a 10 x 20 unit.

Appliances

Make sure all appliances are clean and dry.  Refrigerators and freezers should have the door left slightly ajar.  Some boxes or other good can be stored inside of appliances.  Boxes can be stacked on top of refrigerators, freezers, or stoves.

Bicycles

Use a rag with a few drops of oil to wipe down all metal surfaces to prevent rust.

Books

Pack books flat to protect their spine.  Place a piece of wood or plastic between the concrete floor and all boxes to prevent moisture asorption.  Place packing material in all boxes that are not full.  Do not put fragile items in a box with books.  Do not overload boxes, books are heavy.

Bedding, clothing, curtains, and linens

These items should be stored on hangers.  Wardrobe boxes may also be used.  If the items are too large for a box or cannot be hung up then they should be carefully folded and stored in drawers or cedar chest.

Dishes and glassware

Use a layer of packing on the bottom and top of each box.  Glass items should be individually wrapped.  Nest cups and bowls with a piece of paper between each item.  Completely fill all pockets with packing material.  Place glass item on the top of the carton.  Don't stack heavy items on top of these cartons.

Furniture

Stand sofas and mattresses on end with corrugated cardboard under each item.  Disassemble tables and beds.  Wrap furniture legs in paper.  Most chairs can be stacked or placed upside down on each other.  Use dust covers on top of furniture.
